Sep 26,  · An induction motor has 2 main parts; the Stator and Rotor (Fig:1). The Stator is the stationary part and the rotor is the rotating part. The stator is basically a 3 coil winding and three phase AC power input is given to it. The Rotor sits inside the Stator. Universal Motor(which works on both AC and DC supply). The most usable AC motor works on the principle of electromagnetic induction so they are called Induction motor. The induction motor is the most usable motor and has a lot of advantages. In this article, we are going to know the working principle of induction motor.

Induction motor is a machine that simply operates on the induction type principle. It was invented by the scientist Tesla who earlier conducted several experiments on the working of the alternating current systems. Later, several experiments have been done to improve the performance of this type. This led to the inventions of the induction type of generator. But this type has limited dorks due to some of the cons than the pros of this generator. However, the motoring function finds its requirement in many areas like industries and home appliances.

This current is induced as the rotor conductors are influenced by the RMF.

The rotor tries to rotate at RMF speed but it cannot do so because of the opposition caused according to the Lenz law. The squirrel cage motor consumes high starting current times of full load currentand low starting torque.

These disadvantages are overcome by the introduction of Slip ring IM. It is used as an external circuit which has high resistance connected in series with the circuit.

It also provides a good starting torque to the motor. After the smooth run of the motor, the external circuit is removed to avoid running losses.

So, it acts as an external circuit to maintain high starting torque and inducfion low current while starting. This part provides the electromagnetic field required to drive the rotating part of the motor. It is made up of a number of stampings with slots to carry three-phase winding. Each winding is separated by degrees from the other winding. It is the rotating part of the motor. The Rotor is shaped as an anchor with a core which is cylindrical in shape. Around the core are parallel slots which carry the conduction.

The core has a bar made of aluminum, copper, or alloy. Single Phase Induction Motor is not a self-starting motor. Here motor is connected to a single-phase power supply which carries an AC current to the main winding. Since AC supply is a sinusoidal wave, it produces a pulsating magnetic field in the Stator winding. Pulsating magnetic fields are two magnetic fields rotating in opposite directions; hence no torque is generated.

So after supplying the current, Rotor has to be moved in either direction externally for the motor to start running. It is very easy to change the speed of this type of Asynchronous Motor by just changing the shape of the bars in the Rotor. This is also known as Phase Wound Induction Motor. Here the Rotor is connected to external resistance via slip rings. The speed of the Rotor is controlled by adjusting the external resistance. Since this motor has more windings than a squirrel cage Induction Motor, it is also named as Wound Rotor Induction Motor.
